Q&A with Romeoville Dental Center Office Manager Jen
Q. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
When I was young, I had my eye on the numbers! I thought I wanted to be either a Math teacher or an accountant. I think it was because my third-grade math teacher was such an inspiration to me. It wasn’t until high school when taking trigonometry that I realized math was not for me, but I do work with numbers as a very important part of managing the dental office.
Q. How did you get into your job at the Dental Office?
Believe it or not, my mom was a hygienist at Romeoville Dental Center when I started 23 years ago as a teenager. I was a dental assistant back then, so I have a great understanding of all the different roles here, which also helps me be a better manager.
Q. What are your main duties at the office?
The Office Manager has a lot of responsibilities and duties. The main goal is to make sure everything runs smoothly, which means I do a little bit of everything, from working directly with patients and the rest of the staff to insurance claims and financial arrangements.
Q. What’s your favorite thing about your job?
People. I love people. I love helping people. I have had the privilege of watching kids grow up throughout the years, many of them from the time they were babies all the way to coming in with families of their own. It’s incredible to have that kind of long-term relationship and see the difference we make.
Q. What is it about you that makes you great at your job?
I am a firm believer that you should treat people the way you want to be treated. Part of doing that depends on being able to understand what they need, sometimes without asking. I believe I am able to put everything aside and put myself in the patient’s shoes no matter what it is. That combination of empathy and sympathy is an important part of everything I do here.
Q. Can you think of a memorable experience at the office you’d like to share?
Yes! Of all the aesthetic cases we have done, there is one that stands out as topping them all and is so memorable. A woman came to our office for her first visit, extremely terrified of the dentist, and embarrassed by her teeth. There was no smiling for her, and when she spoke, she would cover her mouth. After her treatment at her last visit, she had almost everyone in the office crying she was so happy with the results. What a gift!
Q. What are some of your favorite things to do outside of work?
I love spending time with my family, especially my nieces! Most of my family lives an hour or so away so I appreciate any chance I can get to be with them. Last year really brought home how important that is.
One of my hobbies is traveling to different dragstrips throughout the year with my boyfriend and friends that drag race. That might not be the first thing you’d expect, but it’s so much fun!
