Getting to Know Romeoville Dental Center Hygienist Lou
We interviewed another Romeoville dental hygienist! This time, we sat down with Lou (Louise) to hear how her career as a hygienist began and lots of other little details.
Q&A with Romeoville Dental Center Hygienist Lou
Q. How, when, and why did you decide to become a dental hygienist?
I was always fascinated by teeth. Growing up, I also really liked my general dentist, and it was his dental assistant who first suggested it. I was pretty young then, so it feels like I just always wanted to do this! It’s a win-win because I also always wanted to help people. I went straight out of high school and got on the fast track. The rest was history!
Q. Can you share some insight into what makes you especially good at your job?
I’m really a people person. I love talking and getting to know people and helping in any way I can. I have a caring way of putting people at ease. It takes being able to go a step above to gain their trust. We get a lot of people who have had bad experiences, and making them comfortable is critical because if you can’t, it’s very hard to give them the best care that they need and deserve. I help them understand the relief they will feel when they find out that it’s not what they’re imagining and it’s not what they have experienced in the past.
Q. How long have you been a Romeoville Dental Center Hygienist?
I’ve been in this business my whole career, and that’s a long time! I spent the first 15 years or so focused on periodontal disease, in which I had a high degree of proficiency in school. Then I branched out, and I’ve been with this practice here in Romeoville (and sometimes in the other office in Palos Heights, too) for about five years.
This is a really special place to be because these doctors really do care — it feels different and patients feel it, too. The work is pristine. We all set out to do our best. I want to do the most that I can for my patients, bring them to good oral hygiene without sugar-coating (no pun intended) — and they appreciate it. We always ask for reviews and we get them because the experience is real.
Q. What’s the funniest or most surprising thing a patient ever said to you, or just a memorable experience at the office?
The most notable thing to me about my patients is how loyal they are. I’ve had some of the same patients since their first cleaning ever. I’m still cleaning their teeth and now their kids’ teeth! Many of them left other dentists to follow me. They love this practice!
Q. Why did you choose to work in Romeoville?
I love the flatland and cornfields, and the people are great. I was born on the East Coast but grew up here in the Midwest and it’s definitely home.
Q. Tell us more about yourself. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Cooking is on my list of favorite activities. I’m known for serving a traditional Oktoberfest with authentic German schnitzel, sauerbraten, spaetzle, and red cabbage. I enjoy reading Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series (rom-com mysteries that will put a smile on your face), and card games (both online and in-person) like cribbage and euchre. Of course, I love being with the grandkids attending their baseball games and visiting the chickens my daughter and family raise. Simple life I guess.
Q. Last but not least, one more question for you. As a dental hygienist, what’s your best advice for patients?
Stay on your preventative protocol and keep coming. Be proactive. I’m a big fluoride advocate. And don’t try to brush over your flossing (pun intended) — I can always tell when someone’s fibbing about flossing. I’m always happy to review the proper technique though!
I always like to say, “Be true to your teeth and they won’t be false to you!” (Soupy Sales)
