It’s that time of year again! Pencils are sharpened, backpacks are packed, and children across the country are struggling to get back into their school year routine. You’ve checked everything off the school supplies checklist, but what about the dental checklist? Here are a few tips to make sure your child’s smile is back-to-school brilliant and ready for new school pictures.
While you’re at the store stocking up on notebooks, pencils, and folders, make sure to pick up a new toothbrush, too. The ADA recommends that you replace your toothbrush (or your child’s toothbrush) every three months or so. Get on a solid replacement schedule by starting the year off with a new brush. If your child is young, you might consider letting them pick out their own toothbrush. It helps them feel more involved in their dental care, and they’re likely to be more motivated to brush if they have a toothbrush they like.
Starting a school year routine isn’t just for the kids. Parents have their own routines, too, and many of them include packing a healthy school lunch. When you’re grocery shopping, make sure to pick up some of our favorite tooth-friendly snacks. Apples, celery, and carrots are all great for scrubbing teeth clean and producing a bit more saliva to rinse out your child’s mouth. This is ideal since it’s not likely they can get in a quick brushing session after lunch or snack time. Another favorite of ours is cheese. The calcium-rich food is great for tooth enamel, and string cheese is a quick and easy snack to eat.
One of the best ways to prepare your child to head back to school is by scheduling a dental appointment. Taking your child to the dentist during the summer means no missing out on school time for an appointment. Your child might not think this is appealing, though!
