What is Botox and is it Safe?
Botox is an FDA-approved botulinum toxin injected into your muscles to relax them by blocking the transmission of the nerve signal to the muscles. Normally, when the pull of the muscles relaxes, the overlying skin flattens.
What Can I Expect During Treatment?
First, you discuss the results you’d like to achieve with Dr. Sheikh during the initial consultation. On the day of your appointment, Dr. Sheikh will mark the targeted areas of your face to map out the right facial muscles to administer the injections. With a very small needle, she injects small amounts of Botox into the muscles to soften them.
Based on your goals and the results you’d like to achieve, Dr. Sheikh will recommend the right number of units and injections needed.
Although you may feel light or small stinging sensations during the Botox injections, pain doesn’t typically linger — and for many, the process is pain-free. However, if you have a fear of needles or are anxious, don’t hesitate to let us know! We’ll do everything we can to help you feel more comfortable.
Finally, Botox results typically are visible within the first 24 to 48 hours, but optimal results appear between one and two weeks after your treatment.
How Often Do I Need Botox Treatments?
That all depends on your goals. Botox injections usually last between three to six months. Although, they can sometimes last as long as four to 12 months, depending on your individual facial muscles.
The effect of Botox to reduce headaches lasts for about three months, so you might want to make another appointment at that time to limit the chances of resuming the severity of your headaches.
Depending on the patient, the results from Botox treatments for Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ) can last anywhere from three to five months. As the Botox begins to wear off and the masseter muscle expands, you may notice a reversal in facial structure and TMJ symptoms.
Will I Look Inexpressive or Unnatural?
Absolutely not! You’re in the very best hands with Dr. Sheikh. She has extensive experience administering facial injectables and produces lovely, smooth natural-looking results that are nowhere near frozen or expressionless. While Botox reduces the movement of your facial muscles, it doesn’t completely restrict your ability to make natural facial expressions.
