Q&A with Romeoville Dental Center Dental Assistant Maddy

Q. What made you want to work in a Dental Office?
What made me want to work in the dental field was that my mom Carlene worked for a dental office — this one actually! My sister and I always loved going to visit her at work, and the field just grew on me after that.
Q. How long have you been a Dental Assistant?
I have been a dental assistant for about two years now. It’s always fun to meet patients for the first time, but I’ve especially enjoyed having them come back, and now I’m really starting to feel like I know them.

Q. What makes you great at your job?
What makes me great at my job would be that I’m a great listener. People often come in nervous or worried or busy or distracted, and I enjoy listening for their questions and concerns and being able to help make them feel comfortable.
Q. What are your top three tips or pieces of advice for patients?
One of the top pieces of advice I can give a patient is that there’s no reason to be nervous! I know that’s easier said than done, especially if you’ve had a bad experience before, but we’re here to help. One of the most rewarding things is seeing a patient who is a little apprehensive walk out with a huge smile on their face and walk in with one at their next visit.

Q. What do you love about Romeoville? Any favorite spots or best-kept secrets?
I can’t think of anything in particular, but it’s one of the things overall that makes me really love this job. We’re always meeting new people, and we get a variety of different patients with different personalities and experiences and it’s nice to always be talking about something new and getting recommendations for fun things to do or places to eat. I had a patient recently that told me she goes to a blueberry patch every year, which I had never heard of. A couple of weeks later I ended up going myself!
Q. What are some of your favorite things to do outside of work?
Outside of work I love going on bike rides and spending time with my dog! I’ve tried to combine those things; however, my dog is not a fan of bikes! Most Sundays you can find me at my parents’ home trying out all the new food they like to cook, as I am not a great cook. I do bake a new dessert to bring there every week. Recently I’ve perfected blueberry cobbler and chocolate chip cookies!
